The average veterinary dental surgeon makes $8.15 an hour in the state of California, according to the California Veterinary Medical Association.
But that figure does not include the costs of training, certification and other benefits that go with being a veterinary dental technician.
Those costs add up, so many dentists are considering the opportunity to move to the United States and work for the US government, where they can earn much more, said Dr. Scott D. Johnson, a former director of the National Veterinary Medical Assn.
in San Francisco and the president of the American Veterinary Medical Society.
Many vets are also looking at their career options elsewhere in the world and considering other options, Johnson said.
Many dentists were not previously considered qualified for the United Kingdom, where salaries are typically comparable to those in the United.
“You might have a guy who worked for the UK National Health Service, and he was the highest-paid dental assistant in the country,” Johnson said, referring to the British health system.
“He’s the one who’s going to pay the highest wages.”
While it’s true that the UK has relatively lower dental rates, it’s not like the dental profession is a low-wage occupation, Johnson added.
“It’s the same with the dental assistants in the US, they’re probably earning a lot more than the American dentists,” Johnson explained.
In fact, dentists have the highest hourly pay for any occupation in the U.S., according to a 2015 study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
The median hourly wage for a dental assistant was $13.10 in 2012.
Dentists make the most, at $23.25, according the study.
The top five occupations for dental assistants, according for 2016 were: • Dentists, including general practitioners, dental assistants and other dental professionals • Pain specialists, including dental assistants • Dental surgeons, including orthodontics, dentistry, oral surgery and oral pathology • Physician assistants, including medical assistants and dental assistants The study also found that dentists in the city of Los Angeles earn the most per hour at $24.40, followed by dentists working in the cities of San Francisco, San Diego and San Jose.
“That’s a big difference, and it’s because they’re more highly educated,” Johnson added, adding that dentistry is a highly specialized occupation that can require specialized training.
Dentistry has a history of increasing inequality.
In the early 1900s, there were fewer than 40 dentists operating in the nation, according a study by the University of Chicago in 2013.
That number has risen to about 150 today, according an analysis by the American Association of University Professors.
“Dentists have been the primary earners of the U:S.
dentists for a long time,” Johnson noted.
“In fact, the profession is one of the most unequal in the whole of the world.”
The National Center for Education Statistics, a division of the Census Bureau, reported in 2012 that dentist salaries in the USA were almost twice those of dental assistants.
The highest median hourly wages in 2016 were in San Diego County, where dentists earned $25.70, while dentists living in the San Francisco Bay Area earned $24,400.
